My favourite holiday reads:

1. The Killing of Emma Gross by Damien Seaman. I loved everything about it: the clean, uncluttered style, the simultaneously vivid and subtle journey through 1929 Dusseldorf, and the fact that it’s based on real events. As good as it gets.

2. The Dinner by Herman Koch. The Slap meets We Need to Talk about Kevin I’d say. An original structure, a narrator you wouldn’t trust to babysit, and troubling thoughts that stay with you long after you’ve finished.

I’m really looking forward to sharing the stage with Herman at the Edinburgh Book Festival Friday 24 August – 10:15am – 11:15am, The Guardian Spiegeltent.
