Great blurb for The Cry from Chris Ewan

•May 8, 2013 • Leave a Comment

Just got the most amazing blurb from Chris Ewan (Safe House)

“THE CRY is an exceptional novel. Fierce, unflinching, innovative in both structure and style, this powerful noir tale is by turns devastating and uplifting. More than simply a blistering dissection of a toxic relationship placed under the most extreme strain, THE CRY is a plea to be heard and it deserves to bring Fitzgerald’s work to a much wider audience.”

Thanks Chris. Totally chuffed!

Stalking for blurbs

Stalking Gillian Flynn

I’m not stalking you, Gillian Flynn, I’m offering you an opportunity. You’ll love my next book. I write like you. Which means we’re alike.  Which means we’re friends, practically. We know each other. You’ll see this, once you’ve read my book.

This is what you’ll say when you do:

The Cry is exceptional, emotional, funny, heartbreaking, page-turning, unputdownable. It’s the book I aspire to write.

Ah Gillian. My Gill.  There’s your blurb, on the front cover, and I am a Number One bestseller. We have so much in common!

Imagine if you missed out on this opportunity. I won’t let that happen, honey. We’ll get to know each other. You won’t realise it’s happening at first. You might notice that I retweet you (You might not. I’ll only do it every fifth tweet). You’ll see some lovely comments on your Facebook page. We’ll have a lot of friends in common. Google alerts will come in saying I mentioned you on my blog and you’ll find yourself saying: “Wow, this Helen FitzGerald really loves my stuff. We must be like-minded. She must write like me. I must read her next book now, but it’s not out till September. How, HOW can I get my hands on it?”

Now now, Gillian, you’re coming over a bit stalky, and no-one likes that. Be patient. We’re going to get even closer.

I’ll make the move when it’s time.

Who Done it? (Soho Teen Anthology)

Who Done It – a star-studded anthology with a devilish hook – proceeds benefit 826nyc: the fabulous literacy non-profit founded by Dave Eggers.

Who Done It?

It was such fun writing for this (very strange) anthology.

#3 (Teens) on Amazon.com. I think it’s the blurbs what done it.

“Of all the books I’ve ever read, this was definitely the most recent.”—Jennifer Smith, author of The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight

“Who are you?  Why are you writing down everything I’m saying?  What book?  What are you talking about?”—Lemony Snicket, author of A Series of Unfortunate Events and Who Could That Be at This Hour?

“Without a doubt, one of the top 10,000 books of the year.”—Robin Wasserman, author of The Book of Blood and Shadow

“Exceptionally rectangular.”—Kiersten White, author of Paranormalcy

The Devil’s Staircase in the shade

The Devil’s Staircase was published a few years ago, but has only just come out on Kindle.  For the month of January, it’s been on offer with Amazon and (as you can see below) it’s been doing quite well.

This month, we’re meeting with the director in London to move the film towards production… Can’t wait to find out who’ll play Bronny.

It’s available for another week at £1.59 here.

Cover for The Cry

•January 16, 2013 • 4 Comments

I love this cover!

It makes me feel all the things I felt when I was writing the book: scared, heartbroken, sometimes even a little obsessed.

Thanks to Sarah Savitt (Editor at Faber) and Alex Kirby (In-house designer at Faber) for doing such a great job.

The Amazon UK blurb:

Someone’s stolen my baby!’ When Joanna shouts for help on a lonely roadside in Australia, it sets off a police investigation that will become a media sensation and dinner-table talk across the world.

The search for baby Noah takes on a life of its own as rumours begin to circulate online and it turns out everyone has something to hide. Guilt eats away at Joanna’s sanity and she and her partner slowly turn against each other. Finally Joanna starts thinking the unthinkable: could the truth be even more terrible than she suspected? And will it take another death to finally make things right?

The Cry is a dark psychological thriller with a gripping moral dilemma at its heart and characters who will keep you guessing on every page.

END OF THE WORLD: WHAT’S YOUR LAST SUPPER?

•December 20, 2012 • 5 Comments

As this may literally be our last supper, I thought I’d tell you what my family had tonight:

  • Chicken Kiev
  • Broccoli
  • Boiled potatoes
  • Oven chips (because there weren’t enough boiled potatoes)
  • Heinz Baked Beans (because there wasn’t enough broccoli)

Please add your own Last Supper and feel free to invite others to contribute.

If we make it through the night, we may have to move on to Last Breakfasts.
